Literature Text

God knows how many people quench
Their dry canvases with paint,
Parched vacuum thirsty for more,
Refusing to stay wet for long.

You're sick of it, aren't you?
They're trumping life up to be
Something as fine as a breath of paint
Yet as thick as its impasto flesh -
But for you, that just adds one more layer
To cut through.

Even the man himself admitted that
"Art is useless", so what's the point?
The people you've (lost and) saved
Didn't hide their hearts under
Blusher and eyeshadow;
They were naked, with a blank,
Begging skin
With a solution just
Dying to be found out.

Your pick axe at the ready,
Gold-hunger drumming around inside,
Slit the tightly knitted threads of something
(That only possessed potential - a poor man
offering his soul to the bailiffs)

That you feel you've seen before
(Your eyes deceive you).
Air is sliced underneath,
Skin tugged skillfully back
(Though it still leaves a wound)
And the surgeon is rewarded for his efforts;
There is nothing.

What else do you expect to find behind a canvas?
I wasn't exactly sure that the title and the poem fitted all that well, as to me the combination sounds like it's discouraging individuality, which I whole-heartedly agree with.

Painting on a canvas is a frequently-used but accurate description of (existentialist views on) life. While discussing this with ~kittykittyhunter, another idea struck me that engraved the image deeper into my head; trying to find meaning that's already there is useless, in the same way cutting open a canvas reveals no other form of art (meaning) behind it. The best thing to do would be to paint and create your own art (meaning).

The "art is useless" quotation is from Oscar Wilde's preface to his collected works.

The "breath of paint" was inspired by a quotation from an artist called James McNeill Whistler: "Paint should not be applied thick ... It should be like breath on the surface of a pane of glass." It just stuck in my head from doing art two years ago.

Thanks again for that lovely poem, dear. :aww:
